The Challenge of Shooting Self-Portraits

Have you ever tried to take a self-portrait? It’s more challenging than you initially thought it would be. The first thing that comes to mind is focusing properly on your subject’s face (YOU), the second one would be having the right facial expression at the time the shutter fires off the first frame. This particular shot was taken at The Don Valley Brickworks in Toronto. I positioned myself in front of one of the furnaces at the abandoned brick factory. Because it was darker than usual (it was in the winter and it was one of those overcast days) the camera was having trouble focusing properly. However, I was lucky enough to have some friends along for the exploration/photowalk trip so I just positioned one of them in front of the camera, focused properly, fired off a test shot and once I saw the focus was good, I jumped in front of the camera at the same spot where my friend was.
